BRENDAN POWELL - RACEHORSE TRAINER

Brendan with Colonel Frank
Originally based at Morestead Stables near Winchester, and having recently moved to Lambourn (July 2007) Brendan Powell has spent the last eight years taking his talent for training racehorses from strength to strength. Brendan's long riding career brought him almost 700 winners including winning The Grand National on Rhyme "N" Reason.
His inexhaustible energy and his total commitment to both the horses in his care and their owners is starting to reap rewards.
From a very modest string of horses seven years ago he now has over 90 horses in his care and has some big wins under his belt on both the flat and over the sticks. He is very proud to have some very classy horses as residents in his yard including COLONEL FRANK, MONEY ORDER, BUBBLE BOY, TORA BORA, PIC UP STICKS AND MAGNESIUM.
Brendan is thrilled to have attracted some high profile owners to his yard too, including J.P McManus and David Johnson.
Many of Brendan's owners have been with him since he started and their loyalty is appreciated.
Brendan is liked and respected by many in the racing industry. He has spent his lifetime in the sport he so clearly loves. He is very approachable, has a great sense of fun, but is extremely hard working with a total "hands on" approach to training.
Whether you are looking for a trainer for your 2 year old flat horse, or you have a 10 year old National hunt horse that needs some TLC and reschooling and everything in between, Brendan is the trainer for you.
Sole owners, partnerships and syndicates can all be catered for with plenty of opportunities to see your horses working out on the gallops.
If you are interested in asking Brendan to purchase you a horse on your behalf you can rest assured Brendan will spend your money as frugally as if it were his very own!

An article written by respected journalist Jonathon Powell. - pubished in 2006
This piece was written about Brendan Powell by Jonathan Powell and was the introduction for Brendan's booklet that was handed out at the Open Day on September 10th 2006.
"Brendan Powell swiftly developed into a man for all seasons when he set out as a trainer at Morestead. Hardy sprinters, mud loving long distance chasers, promising young hurdlers and sharp two year olds can all be found in residence as you wander around the Morestead Stables today. Quite simply winners count in any language for this energetic and increasingly successful trainer. It is a positive attitude that has brought regular reward for his patrons and this weekend Brendan is on the brink of recording his 200th victory in his brief career.
He brings a wealth of experience to the business of training gleaned during a long, bruising and vibrantly successful life as a jump jockey which yielded over 500 winners and a never to be forgotton do or die triumph on Rhyme 'n' Reason in the Grand National. He started training with a handful of horses and a bucketful of dreams, hs progressed every year and can now call on a bank of eighty horses. Be in no doubt that this is a trainer heading for the top.
Owners who entrust their horses to the care of Brendan Powell know instinctively that they are getting value for money from a man who remains restlessly ambitious. There are no short cuts here. Just look at his frantic schedule on a day in high summer when he had runners at four meetings in the south of England. Somehow he managed to turn up at Stratford, Worcester and Kempton to supervise the saddling of his horses and chat to their connections. And the fourth? Perhaps by then he was exhausted. But in mitigation it is only fair to point out that even Michael Schumacher in his red Ferrari would not have considered dashing down the M4 to Chepstow to see the final runner at 8.10 barely 40 minutes after a race at Kempton. All this at the end of a day that typically started before dawn at the stableyard at Morestead and ended wearily close to midnight.
It is this hands on approach and intensity of purpose that is beginning to attract some of the major players, particularly in jump racing. Several years ago David Johnson said he would send Brendan a horse. He has done better that that with three currently in training here including Ballybough Jack who boats a highly promising second to Noland in a Wincanton bumper. Ireland's leading racehorse owner, J.P. McManus enjoyed instant success with his new trainer last season with the highly talented but ill fated Tokala. This season, JP has five in training at Morestead including four unraced youngsters and a likely point to point recruit purchased from Adrian Maguire.
Another key player drawn irresistably to Morestead is Paul Green who has two horses in training here.
Then there are the stalwarts like Les Gilbert and Ann Ellis. Les is justifiably proud of the fact that he provided Brendan with his first triumph as a trainer with My Galliano, a splendidly versatile old warrier who later added victories over fences and on the flat. Ann Ellis, another staunch supporter has four in training with Brendan this season.
They and countless other owners with Brendan Powell can look forward to this season with eager anticipation."
